The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) reaffirmed its call on the Chadian transitional authorities to strictly adhere to the 18-month transition period. The organization also insisted unambiguously on the ineligibility of the members of the transition for future elections. It was through a press release made public this Thursday, September 29.
In Chad, the transition must rigorously end on October 20. With three weeks to go, the ad hoc committee set up by the presidium of the national dialogue underway in the country has recommended extending the duration of the transition by a maximum of 24 months. The same committee also validated the candidacy of the generals who are currently in charge of this transitional period.
If these proposed resolutions are adopted at the dialogue plenary, it bodes well for a difficult future between the African Union and the Chadian Military Transitional Council.
For the time being, the AU Peace and Security Council would like to remind members of the transition that the deadline ends on October 20 and that “no member of the Transitional Military Council (TMC) may be a candidate in the elections at the end of the transition. The institution also said it would “convene a special session in due course to specifically examine the political transition in Chad.
The AU also called on all armed groups that have not yet signed the Doha peace agreement, as well as parties that boycotted the inclusive national dialogue, to reconsider their position and participate in the process “with a view to establishing a lasting peace” in Chad.
She also called on other member states and development partners to continue to accompany Chad in the political transition towards a full return to constitutional order.
