Unidentified armed men attacked several localities in the prefecture of Kpendjal during the night of Thursday 14 July. An area located in the Savanes region of northern Togo. For the moment, no official information has been given, but more than a dozen deaths have been reported.

Ten dead in Blamonga and five more in Kpembol. This is the provisional toll of a terrorist attack in the prefecture of Kpendjal where these two localities are located. But sources indicate that other localities have also been visited by the attackers. This situation is a further blow to the people, who are becoming more worried. Several inhabitants are already fleeing to seek refuge in safer municipalities. The vehicle of the Mandouri brigade commander was reportedly blown up by an explosive device on its way to Blamonga.

No armed group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The authorities have not, for the moment, communicated an assessment of the deadly violence, while the President of the Republic is on a trip to the Kara region, the southern neighbour of the Savanes region. He attends with part of the government the annual meeting of traditional fights in Kabyè country.

The Savanes region recorded a first deadly attack in May that left eight soldiers dead. It was claimed by the Gnim (Islamic-Muslim Support Group). But before that, the army had repelled a first attack in November 2021. Since mid-June 2022, a state of security emergency has been declared in this part of Togo. It should be noted that the prefecture of Kpendjal borders Burkina Faso to the north and Benin to the east, both of which have experienced jihadist incursions into their territories.
