The broadcast of the Wura series is all the more anticipated as it is based on the successful South African series The River.
WURA, much more than a fiction
Wura tells the often overlooked story of gold mining in Nigeria. Wura is also the story of Wura-Amoo Adeleke, a perfect woman, a loving mother but a ruthless businesswoman. General Manager of the fictitious Frontline gold mine, she will stop at nothing to achieve her professional goals.
The series is set in the gold mining industry in Iperindo, a small community in Osun State, southwestern Nigeria. One of the groups of seven gold deposits around the town of Ilesha.
Despite the promise of the precious metal for Iperindo and the surrounding communities, the people are still suffering from poverty and environmental disasters due to illegal mining activities. Although fictional, the series sheds light on this reality which is very present in our African societies.
Wura is the result of a project whose ultimate goal is not only to entertain but also to educate viewers.
Dr Busola Tejumola, Head of Content for West African channels at MultiChoice, said in a statement that Showmax is proud of the result and looks forward to sharing it with the general public.
The broadcast of this new series is a representation of the upstream work that the African film industry is doing to expand the continent’s film repertoire and reach a wider audience.
