Burkina Faso: The national conference started without Captain Ibrahim Traoré

    By Gérard Dawa14 October 2022Updated:19 June 2023
In Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré will be sworn in as president of the transition on Friday 21 October 2022. This investiture ceremony follows his unanimous designation on 15 October by a national meeting of the nation's active forces. At 34, Ibrahim Traoré will become the second youngest president of the country of the men of integrity. One of his greatest challenges is security, where Burkina Faso faces numerous terrorist attacks.

The national meeting convened by President Ibrahim Traoré for the adoption of the Transition Charter began on Friday 14 October 2022. Unfortunately, the new strong man of Faso missed the meeting and was represented by Captain Marcel Meda. In his speech, the representative of the MPSR 2 briefly recalled the gloomy context that led to the holding of the conference and called for differences to be overcome in order to lay the foundations for sustainable development.

At the beginning of his speech, the representative of the MPSR 2, Captain Marcel Meda, recalled the various reasons that motivated the coup on Friday 30 September 2022. According to him, the advent of the MPSR on 24 January 2022 had raised a lot of hope for the Burkinabe people, who were suffering from an unprecedented security crisis. But this hope, he says, has only remained at the stage of a promise and we are witnessing the continued deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the country.

“In view of the slippage observed and in order to avoid getting bogged down, it has proved necessary to redress the balance in order to continue the process in the best possible way.

Thus, on 29 and 30 September 2022, officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers in the ranks were forced to take their responsibilities to refocus and reframe the objectives of the Transition around the priorities, namely the reconquest and securing of the entire national territory,” explained Captain Marcel Meda.

Captain Traoré wants an inclusive process

“The Head of State would like the process that will be initiated following these meetings to be not only inclusive, but also and above all in line with the deep aspirations of our people. As a reminder, as part of the preparations, a technical commission has carried out a review of the Charter adopted in March 2022,” said the MPSR 2 representative, Captain Marcel Meda. He confided that this prerequisite made it possible to make available to the present Conference a draft Charter which will be the subject of in-depth examination and amendments.

In addition, with a view to ensuring broad participation of Burkinabè from the interior and the diaspora, a digital platform has been designed to broaden contributions for a much more consensual implementation of the Transition.

The solemn call for unity and harmony

Daughters and sons of Burkina Faso, through these Conferences, we have another appointment with history. We must put aside our differences, pool the richness of our diversity, in order to preserve what is essential and write a new page in our history, that of a people that assumes its destiny and gives itself clear guidelines for the construction of a strong and resilient nation, a nation capable of restoring peace and security and initiating sustainable development.

I would therefore like to pay tribute to all the participants who spared no effort to attend these National Conferences which, in the end, will define the bodies that will lead the Transition. The signing of the Charter that will result from your work marks the official starting point of this Transition oriented towards the major challenges of our country.

I would like to invite you to make enriching contributions by putting the higher interest of the Nation and the deep and legitimate aspirations of the Burkinabe people at the centre.

Demonstrators outside, demand Traoré as president

While the works national conferences are taking place in the Ouaga 2000 conference hall, outside, demonstrators, Russian and Burkinabe flags in hand, are clamouring for the Wagner group in the fight against terrorism… and for Captain Traoré as President of the Transition.

The latter would like Burkina Faso to go beyond mere military cooperation, which is limited to the use of some Russian military equipment.
