The president of the Malian transition, Colonel Assimi Goïta, received on Tuesday the draft of the new constitution of Mali. It was in the presence of the Acting Prime Minister, Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, members of the Government and presidents of the institutions of the Republic. A key step in the reforms undertaken by the junta in the process of rebuilding the Malian state.
According to the document sent to the head of the junta, procedures for the impeachment of the presidents of the Republic, the National Assembly and the High Council of the Nation have been introduced in the preliminary draft of Mali’s new constitution. The text will be submitted to a referendum in March 2023.
“This new constitution is an important marker in the process of rebuilding the Malian state,” said Fousseyni Samaké, chairman of the Commission in charge of the Drafting of the New Constitution (CRNC). He added that it “responds to the deep aspirations of the Malian people, expressed during the National Conference on Refoundation” held last December.
Planned to be written in two months, it is finally in four months that the commission in charge of the elaboration of the document has accomplished its duty. “Our common hope for a renewed democracy, as well as a better organized state that is equal to the national and international challenges, rests on this preliminary draft constitution that has just been handed to me,” said the president of the transition, Colonel Assimi Goïta
The draft of the new constitution, a document of 195 articles, proposes a two-chamber parliament: a National Assembly as the first chamber and the High Council of the Nation as the second chamber. The latter, in some countries, is called the Senate. It is also worth noting the addition of the Court of Audit to the list of institutions of the Republic.
