The Senegalese government in partnership with the National Association for the Intensification of Dairy Production (Anipl), received this Saturday, February 4th, 1200 pregnant heifers with high dairy potential. The initiative aims to boost national milk production in order to reduce the milk bill.
In the presence of the partners of the dairy industry, the president received these 1200 animals, composed of Montbelliard, Brown Alpine, Holstein and Jersiaise species. Macky Sall took the opportunity to pay tribute to the efforts made by those involved in the sector.
“My presence here in Niague confirms the considerable and remarkable efforts made by the actors of the dairy sector for several years,” he said before indicating that the government has mobilized 1.200 billion CFA francs to support the acquisition of 1,200 heifers with high dairy potential.
“I have decided to substantially increase the budget allocated to the import of pregnant heifers with high dairy potential in order to increase the number of imported animals from 1,200 to 2,500 per year and the subsidy from 30 to 50%. This increase in subsidy is already effective with this operation which brings us together today. The Government has mobilised 1,200,000,000 CFA francs to support the acquisition of 1,200 animals,” the Senegalese Head of State said.
He also recalled that the dairy sector is included in the Livestock Pact adopted at the Dakar 2 Summit held from 25 to 27 January. According to him, “exogenous shocks such as the Covid-19 pandemic and major wars have reminded us that it is imperative for a country to have control over its food.
According to him, “Senegal is resolutely oriented towards the production of strategic foodstuffs such as milk, meat, chicken and eggs for consumption, as well as the inputs that are indispensable for its realisation, including maize and eggs.
