The French ambassador in Tunisia, André Parant, received in audience this Wednesday, October 5, representatives of the National Federation of Tunisian Communes (FNCT). The meeting aims to formalize the renewal of the embassy’s support to this federation and to proceed with the signing of a new support project for the FNCT and the communes for an amount of 3.1 million euros financed by the French Development Agency and implemented by Expertise France.
3.1 million Euros will soon be made available to Tunisian municipalities. This is the new financial support announced by France. For several decades, France has supported the development of Tunisian municipalities to improve the quality of life of their inhabitants.
More than 300 million euros invested in 30 years
Over the thirty years of its operations in Tunisia, AFD has provided more than 330 million euros to the Local Authorities Loan and Support Fund (CPSCL) to support municipal investments. Also, as part of the national program to rehabilitate neighborhoods initiated by the Ministry of Public Works, France’s support has made it possible to provide roads, sanitation networks, public lighting, gymnasiums and other facilities in nearly 1,130 neighborhoods for the benefit of 3.3 million Tunisians.
The FNCT has more financial resources to better fulfill its duty
The renewal of the grant agreement by the French Embassy is a new era for the FNCT. This allows it not only to strengthen its training and support capacities for elected officials, to consolidate its international relations, but also to play a driving role in the development of decentralized cooperation actions.
During the same ceremony, a 3.1 million euro grant agreement was also signed between AFD and Expertise France for the implementation of a new project. Called Tamnia Baladia, this new project is based on two major axes. Support of the FNCT as a representative body and spokesperson for the Tunisian communes, but also as an organization providing advisory assistance to member communes; and the financing of innovative projects carried out by the communes that will improve the services provided to their inhabitants.
It should be noted that a project financing fund will be created for the Tamnia Baladia project and calls for projects to the municipalities will also be launched.
