On a visit to the United Kingdom for the flag raising ceremony at the Commonwealth headquarters, President Faure Gnassingbé was received on Thursday 20 October by King Charles III. The hearing was held at Buckingham Palace. On the agenda of the discussions between the two personalities, the strengthening of cooperation between Lomé and London.
“I am delighted with the quality of the meeting I had on Thursday 20 October 2022 with His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace,” said Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé at the end of the discussions.
Strengthening cooperation through three key sectors
The strengthening of cooperation between Lomé and London was the main concern during the meeting with the new British monarch. The Togolese Head of State, Faure Gnassingbé, emphasised three areas in particular that give meaning to the cooperation in view. It is aboutsecurity, peace and the environment.
According to a source, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to consolidate this cooperation.
Togo in the footsteps of Gabon
Faure Gnassingbé is in London for the official flag-raising ceremony at the Commonwealth headquarters.
The delegation he led to England attended the ceremony at the Commonwealth headquarters at Marlborough House, which marked the official entry of Togo into the organisation which now has 56 states worldwide.
Togo was admitted to the Commonwealth on 25 June last, at the same time as Gabon, whose flag was raised on Monday 17 October last.
The Commonwealth, a diplomatic and economic opportunity for Togo
The Commonwealth is an organisation composed mostly of former British territories. According to the Togolese authorities, it is a diplomatic opportunity to open up the country’s relations with the outside world.
Similarly, the authorities explain that the organisation offers an economic opportunity as a new market of almost two billion consumers is open to Togo.
It should be noted that Togo has planned a session in the margins of the flag-raising ceremony. A meeting during which the main economic, cultural and social characteristics of the country will be presented.
