The opening of the inclusive national dialogue in Chad is scheduled for 20 August. With about three weeks to go, the President of the Transitional Military Council (CMT) held a meeting with political parties on Thursday 28 July. On the occasion, Mahamat Idriss Déby reassured the public that the dialogue will be held on time, despite the fact that a large part of the opposition is threatening to boycott it.
It should be noted that the meeting on Thursday was rejected by most of the Chadian opposition political parties. For Mahamat Idriss Déby, this shows the “bad faith” of the layers concerned. “I would like to reassure national and international opinion that the date set for the opening of the inclusive national dialogue remains a deadline. The government and Codni [Organising Committee for the Inclusive National Dialogue, editor’s note] are instructed to keep and respect this deadline,” he said, according to information relayed by RFI.
Moreover, even within the ranks of the participants in this meeting, some denounce the conditions under which the said national dialogue was organised. They demand some sovereignty in the talks before taking part in them. “As long as the conditions of sincerity and balance are not established, nothing can be expected from the dialogue as prepared”, notified Succès Masra, president of the opposition party Les Transformateurs.
The inclusive national dialogue in Chad was initially scheduled for 15 February, then postponed to 10 May before being scheduled for 20 August. It aims to reconcile all sections of society and all the countless rebel groups in order to unite them around a single cause, the development of the country.
This was a promise made by General Mahamat Idriss Déby who came to power after the death of his father, Marshal Idriss Déby Itno. This dialogue should pave the way for free and democratic elections.
