In Rabat as well as in Agadir and all over the country, Moroccans spent a sleepless night to celebrate the historic qualification of the national team for the quarter finals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Vouvouzouela, shouts of joy, songs, dances, car horns; everything is there to celebrate the victory of the Atlas Lions.
Even King Mohammed VI and Crown Prince Moulay Hassan were seen in their respective cars on Tuesday evening to celebrate the event. Wearing the national team’s jersey, flag in hand, the king shared the joy of the Moroccans who came out in large numbers in the streets.
As a reminder, this is the first time that the Atlas Lions have qualified for the quarter finals of the World Cup. On Tuesday, they overcame Spain mainly thanks to the incredible talent of Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who repelled all the Spanish assaults until the legendary penalty shoot-out.
The Atlas Lions thus become the fourth quarter-finalist of the African continent, after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010. On Saturday 10 December, they will try their luck with Portugal, who crushed Switzerland (6-1), in the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.
