The lifeless body of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu was found on Saturday 18 February 2023 under the rubble of his building. This was after a series of earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday 6 February.

The announcement of Christian Atsu’s death has plunged the whole of Ghana into mourning. The player was found dead under the rubble of his building.

Former Chelsea and Newcastle winger Christian Atsu, 31, of Hatayspor in Turkey, was among those reported missing after the massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

According to the player’s agent, his body was found under the rubble of his building in Hatay after several days of searching. It is a 12-storey tower that collapsed in the earthquake.

Christian Atsu died the day after a victory by his Turkish club. On Sunday 5 February, he scored the only goal to lead his team to a Süper lig triumph over Kasimpasa with a last-minute free kick.

It should be noted that the series of earthquakes that shook Turkey and Syria left more than 45,000 dead and over 6,500 buildings destroyed.
