Sadio Mané was announced as the favourite for this edition and won his second African Golden Ball after the one in 2019. He received his trophy on Thursday 21 July in Rabat, Morocco, during the CAF Awards 2022 ceremony.
Great victory for Senegalese Sadio Mané yesterday in Rabat, Morocco. The child of Bambaly, currently playing for Bayern Munich, was voted African player of the year ahead of his compatriot Edouard Mendy of Chelsea FC and his former Liverpool FC teammate, the Egyptian Mohamed Salah.
After leading Senegal to their first ever African Cup of Nations title on 6 February in Cameroon, and then to qualification for the 2022 World Cup, again against Mohamed Salah’s Egypt on 29 March, Sadio Mané was the great favourite for the trophy. He thus makes this historical double after having won it in 2019 in front of Mohamed Salah and the Algerian Riyad Mahrez.
Sadio Mané joins the legendary El Hadj Diouf who also won the Golden Ball twice (2001-2002).
In the women’s category, Nigeria’s Asisat OShoala of FC Barcelona was voted African Player of the Year ahead of Ajara Nchout Njoya of Cameroon and Grace Chanda of Zambia.
