Festival of Light: The crossing over to the New Year among the followers of the Thron Kpéto Déka Alafia vodoun

    By Gérard Dawa24 December 2022Updated:19 June 2023

The followers of the Thron Kpéto Déka Alafia deity are hastily preparing to celebrate the festival of light on Saturday 24 December. The aim of this ceremony is to start the New Year in the best possible way.

Everything is ready at the convent of Hounnongan Ayinahen Assogba Baba Agbakodjina, great dignitary of the Thron cult, to commemorate the 2022 edition of the festival of light.
The ceremonies start with a series of rituals and prayers to ward off bad luck in families and at the level of the whole nation.

According to Hounnongan Ayinahen Assogba, the festival of light is marked by two important moments. These are the kougbidigbidi which starts at 7pm and the big Xwékpikpé prayer session at 10pm.

But before the celebration of the Festival of Light, several ceremonies were held in advance. Indeed, on 4 December, the oracle (the Fâ) was consulted.

This was followed on Sunday 11 December by a ceremony to strengthen the energies of Thron Koundé, Zogbé and kpèdido. Once this stage was completed, on Sunday 18 December the offering to the deities took place through the immolation of rams, goats and chickens. All this, closed by the vodounlilè, gladja and talilè.

It should be noted that after the festival of light, the followers of Thron Kpéto Déka Alafia vodoun from the convent of Hounnongan Ayinahen Assogba will meet on 8 January 2023 for the Kpéila ritual. A popular celebration scheduled for 15 January 2023 will bring the various ceremonies to a close.
