The National University of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics of Abomey organized from Tuesday 28 to Wednesday 29 December 2021 the defense of the first class of its engineering students on its site located in Sogbo-Aliho in Abomey. After five years of regular training, two of which were in the preparatory year and three in the engineering cycle, the students successfully defended their research work before juries composed of experts and professionals.

43 students including 12 in Mathematical and Modeling Engineering, 12 in Energy and Process Engineering and 19 in Public Works from the first promotion of the three UNSTIM engineering schools have brilliantly defended their end of training thesis in two days before thematic juries. This first promotion is named promotion late Professor Gerard DEGAN first rector of UNSTIM having followed the course of these students since 2017 until September 2021 when he left his peers to join his ancestors.

In the different opening speeches, a tribute was paid to him for the numerous efforts made in the rigorous follow-up of these impetuses. ”It was not obvious at first. We are in the process of taking up the professor’s challenge,” says the Director of the National School of Public Works, Dr. Alamou Adéchina Eric. We have taken a first step,” adds the current rector of UNSTIM, Professor Joachim Djimon GBENOU. ‘’With this success rate of over 95%, this first class is the pride of INSPEI and UNSTIM. We are therefore able to solve several problems that delay the development of our country’’ he continues.

Before launching the hostilities, the rector reassured the students while inviting them to give the best of themselves during this last examination which he considers as a test of nerve, an intellectual test. You are on the right track since your dissertations respect the standards of CAMES. Demonstrate to the juries that you can boost the development of your country so that what the government expects from this university is a done deal”. The juries are nevertheless invited to use scientific and dispassionate criticism.

    Presentation of the first impetus.

The opening speeches gave way to the inaugural defense presented by AKPASSONOU M. Romain whose research work focused on the theme “Techno-economic and environmental feasibility study of the energy recovery of waste from the processing of pineapple juice: Case of the company promo fruits Benin in Allada. This theme has evaluated initially the quantity of waste from the production of pineapple within the company and then a study on its recovery including the transformation of its waste into electrical and thermal energy that would be used by the company. According to the members of the jury, this study could significantly contribute to the reduction of the unemployment rate among young people and bring added value to the local economy. The waste from the processing of pineapple juice is a source of wealth that the company can use to reduce its energy consumption to 0%.

At the end of his presentation the first jury composed of Professor GBENOU Djimon Joachim president, Professor GUIDI Clotilde and Professor GODJO Thierry members have examined with attention the candidate’s work. After evaluation of his report, the members of the jury accepted the conclusions of his research by awarding him a very good mention after a few observations that do not detract from the quality of the work. The now engineer promised to make a prototype of his research and to make his project a reality.

Teachers, students, parents, friends, were present during the two days of the defense to accompany the new engineers.

Announced to be present for the opening ceremony and the inaugural defense, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mrs. Eleonore Yayi Ladékan, sponsor of the event, could not make the trip due to a last minute republican emergency.

Created in 2016 in accordance with the Decree No. 2016-638 of October 13, 2016 on the creation of 04 national universities in the Republic of Benin, the National University of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics of Abomey includes four university centers located in Abomey, Natitingou, Lokossa and Dassa-Zoumé.

We can say that the current rector has fulfilled the wish of his predecessor, the late Professor Gérard DEGAN, to see his first students in STEM supported in good conditions.
