On October 18, Gabonese President Ali Bongo will be in London again, less than a month after his last trip to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on September 19. The Gabonese leader is expected to attend the flag-raising ceremony to mark Gabon’s entry into the Commonwealth, which the country officially joined at the Kigali summit last June.
According to the daily Africa Intelligence, Ali Bongo is expected to meet with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland, who received him in May 2021, in London, ahead of Gabon’s entry into the voluntary association currently consisting of 56 sovereign states. “A face-to-face meeting between Ali Bongo and the latter is notably on the agenda”, continues Africa Intelligence.
In addition, “the final program and a possible meeting with the new occupant of 10 Downing Street, Liz Truss, is being finalized,” concluded the publication.
Liz Truss has been the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since September 6 after the resignation of Boris Johnson.
The Commonwealth, in its long form, Commonwealth of Nations, is an intergovernmental organization founded in the first half of the 20th century, the majority of whose members were part of the British Colonial Empire. It is composed of countries essentially united by the English language, historical links and certain values expressed in a charter, such as democracy, freedom of expression or sustainable development.
