Nigerian artist Blackface has accused his compatriots Wizkid, Burna Boy and Asake of plagiarism. This was during an interview with Naija FM in Lagos.
Blackface is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and ex-member of the former group Plantashun Boiz, which he formed with Faze and 2baba. In a radio interview, he accused Wizkid, Burna Boy and Asake of copyright infringement.
“Ginger’ by Wizkid and Burna[Boy]is[une reprise]my track ‘Twist & Turn’; the rhythms, the beat, how the melody starts and ends. Na only the verses dem change. […] “Asake’s ‘Joha’ is a [une reprise] of my song ‘Ikebe Supa.’ I dey inspire them,”, said Blackface.
The singer says he doesn’t mind his songs being covered by Afrobeat stars. However, he makes no secret of the fact that the constant use of his songs without his consent upsets him. He has not, however, indicated that he intends to take legal action against the trio.
It’s worth pointing out that this isn’t the first time Blackface has complained about plagiarism of his musical works.
