Purpose of the position:
This position provides supervision and management of maintenance, and project activities within the company. He/she will ensure compliance with group policies and procedures, as well as develop strategy, implementation and workflow for the maintenance department and ensure the smooth running of activities for expansions and projects.
Maintenance:
Supervise the work and duties of the maintenance team members – Plan, coordinate and supervise the activities of the maintenance department – Ensure timely action is taken in the event of a breakdown – Plan, coordinate and supervise the maintenance of machines to prevent breakdown, ensure preventive maintenance is performed. – Maximize and schedule preventive maintenance and control overtime for members performing maintenance. – Overall cost control for the department in terms of spare parts purchases and spare parts usage. Ensure spare parts are available and plan the year to avoid additional costs to procure them.
Project Planning:
Understand the requirements of projects allocated by the Maintenance Manager and group projects, develop a project plan and share for review and discussion – Review and finalize plan feasibility, resources, safety standards, timelines, and capital budget with supervisor – Share updates on project plan, budget, timelines, resources and update reports as needed with supervisor – Keep abreast of local conditions and highlight areas to supervisor. – Understanding of project plans, drawings and details. Understanding of safety procedures.
Contractor and Vendor Management:
Identify local vendors based on market and network understanding; Share vendor list with supervisor for selection – Assist supervisor in negotiating project cost and delivery schedule – Lead project review meetings to provide status updates, corrective actions and additional steps – Understand and resolve vendor issues to ensure project timelines are met; Escalate complex issues to supervisor and seek guidance on problem resolution
Project Management:
Create draft technical drawings/project plan and solicit feedback from supervisor on technical specifications – Share material requisition requests for critical projects with supervisor for feedback – Conduct periodic review with project execution team and vendor on labor, performance, budget, and schedule and guide teams to initiate corrective actions; Escalate complex issues to supervisor and seek advice on problem resolution – Monitor and ensure adherence to statutory regulations and legal compliance for new projects and technical developments. – Understand manpower / technical support / resources required from manufacturing / contractor / supplier. – Understand the quality and standard, capacity and number of machines quoted by the manufacturer / contractor / supplier.
Process Improvements:
Review existing processes and compliance requirements in accordance with statutory standards for project development activities – Identify areas of cost reduction and an action plan to achieve the cost reduction goal – Formulate an action plan for process improvement and optimization for all key department activities.
People management and corporate values:
Monitor team performance at an overall and individual level and provide support/guidance where needed to ensure achievement of annual plans – Manage effective resource allocation, improve team members’ capability quotient and drive higher team engagement through appropriate P&C interventions – Ensure actions and behaviors are aligned with company values – STEEL. – Provide opportunities and training for technicians / engineers / managers. Good coordination with machine manufacturing, suppliers, contractors.
Desired Profile:
Experience and Education:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/electrical engineering (preferred)
10+ years of experience in plant project management (steel industry – SMS and hot/cold mills and auxiliaries) and installation with hands-on experience in leading a new or expansion project in the African market.
Good understanding of key projects implemented in the steel/manufacturing industry; in project execution/management/coordination
Knowledge and skills:
Knowledge of project planning methodologies – Ability to effectively manage budgets – Knowledge and skills in supplier / contractor management – Knowledge of six sigma / Lean, agile and process improvement methodologies – Understanding of local languages (French and English preferred) – Knowledge of steel manufacturing industries equipment / machinery. – Team management, multi-skilled (mechanical, civil, electrical, manufacturing). – Hands-on experience in installation / execution of steel fabrication machinery and equipment.
